Boldon Schools Media curriculum follows the Pearson’s BTEC Digital Media Production specification. This course is made of 2 units of coursework each worth 30% and a practical exam which makes up 40% of the grade. This course aims to make sure students:

  • Give an insight to the development of a range of media products.
  • Can analyse characteristics of existing media products and discuss their suitability towards a particular audience.
  • Can evaluate characteristics and properties of existing media products and offer alternative views to make improvements.
  • Are aware of the various roles available throughout the production of media products from different sectors.
  • Are able to complete project work that allows for the development of a portfolio that aims to show a range of different creative digital skills.

Media offers an exciting opportunity for students to explore current trends within the digital world. This means that our students are equipped with the most recent skills, knowledge and training in order for them to excel in a career or further studies for media. We allow our students to develop a range of different skills from three main sectors which include interactive media products, audio and moving image and publishing sector. Each three areas are discussed allowing students to find a passion for a specific area of media and develop their skills even further. Students sit a project like exam that follows real world project development techniques fully equipping them to deal with a relevant career for media. Students challenge their creativity to come up with innovative products for a range of scenarios that they could come across in industry. Students are given the independence to explore methods to meet each scenario and we love hearing all the different ways in which each student will explore the scenario and develop a product. This subject truly gives our students the independence to excel creatively in the 3 previously mentioned sectors of Media.

We have offered our students different opportunities to further develop their skills outside the classroom which is important to show them how to approach a task in the industry. Students have previously worked with BBC to develop a range of media products for different scenarios. They are given the opportunity to be mentored by professionals who have years of experience working on some of the most popular tv show, radio channels, website development and graphic development teams. Students get to use a range of exciting up to date software that would also be found in industry further equipping them with the skills they need to excel outside of school. Creative enterprise projects have also been a big part of media where students have worked with OrangeBus a local graphic design company in order to develop digital image solutions that would be suitable to develop for a range of businesses. Media is an exciting exploration of the digital world and involves very different creative sectors, it is truly amazing to watch our students flourish in their chosen area and enthusiastically challenge themselves to meet a range of scenarios.
