Subject Intent

The art department at Boldon School aims to be inclusive and our intention is to allow all students to become creators.  The department promotes learning through a variety of experiences including practical activities and theory based approaches. We encourage students to create work in lots of different ways; using different processes, techniques, materials and resources to generate different kinds of ideas and outcomes. We encourage creative and experimental thinking by covering a over a wide range of art disciplines and subject areas so that students receive an enriched and engaged learning experience both in the classroom, through enrichment and home learning activities.

Within the art, craft and design specification at GCSE students have the opportunity to work in a number of different disciplines including fine art, textile design, graphic communication, 3D design, and photography. Students learn how to build a successful portfolio independently from a starting point by demonstrating critical understanding, experimenting with different materials and techniques, refining and recording their ideas and releasing intentions in a personal and meaningful way. The course gives students the opportunity to experiment with lots of different creative approaches and is therefore a solid foundation for those who are interested in further study in this area. Key transferable skills such as imagination, creativity and resourcefulness as well as visual presentation, oral and written communication and research skills are also a solid foundation for many different study and employment opportunities.
