Subject Intent:

Health and Social care at Boldon school is an industry relevant qualification which is geared toward the key sector requirements. Students will learn the knowledge and skills used by professionals in this sector on a daily basis.

To begin students will discover how humans grow and develop across six different life stages and how development is affected by various factors. In addition they will also learn how people deal with major life events differently and how these events can shape an individuals life.

Students will go on to study and explore health and social care services and how they meet the needs of the real service users. This includes demonstrating a practical understanding of how the care values can be applied. In addition students will learn about the factors that affect health and wellbeing and how to design a health and wellbeing improvement plan.

Assessment of this course consists of two pieces of internally assessed coursework and one external examination. Students are awarded a Btec qualification on completion of the course. This level 2 course perfectly prepares students for level 3 Health and social care courses, A levels, and ultimately university.

About 3 million people work in the health and social care sector, including doctors, nurses, health visitors, midwives, care assistants, occupational therapists, counsellors, and administrators  They account for nearly 1 in 10 of all of the paid jobs in the UK. Demand for both health and social care workers is on the rise and will continue to play a key role in our society making this subject a vital part of our school curriculum.
