Core PE Intent, Implementation & Impact

INNOVATE . FOCUS . ACHIEVE

At Boldon School, all aspects of the school ethos, ‘Innovate, Focus and Achieve’ are underpinned across each subject area. In PE we strive to embed these principles within our curriculum:

Innovate: At Boldon School we promote lifelong participation and inspire students to develop a love and passion for physical activities and sport. This year through our newly designed broad and balanced curriculum we aim to further develop our teaching and learning, creating new schemes of work that incorporate our new Head, Heart and Hands assessment framework that has a holistic outlook so every student can achieve their full potential in PE.

Focus: We strive to ensure that all students understand the long term benefits of physical activity and encourage them to get involved in a range of activities to promote a healthy active lifestyle.

Achieve: Through a range of activities students are able to progress and develop in all aspects of sport. Students have an opportunity to develop as a leader, improve their officiating and take on different roles within sport. We aim for all students to become rounded sporting individuals showing innovative forward thinking, creativity and confidence in all aspects of sport. We want students to develop confidence to excel in a broad range of physical activities and lead healthy, active lives.

Each of our curriculum areas are carefully designed with the students at the heart of our thinking. The intent is for the framework for each programme of study in the National Curriculum to be well planned and sequenced to enable all students to build their knowledge and skills towards the agreed end points at each key stage. We consider how this is taught in order to support our students and ensure this is implemented effectively. For the desired impact to be reflected in the outcomes that students achieve through the education they have received.

This is embedded across each subject area: Core PE

Intent:

The objective of our PE curriculum at Boldon school is to establish and maintain a love of learning in PE and Sport, in order to promote life-long participation. To achieve this, our structured, innovative and engaging schemes of work are delivered in an attempt to develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities. With a key focus on literacy our learning incorporates key terminology specific to the sport, ensuring students acquire new words and apply them in different cross curricular contexts.

When students begin their journey at Boldon School, there is a focus on developing a love for Physical Education whilst embedding and building on the physical development and skills acquired in Key Stages 1 and 2. Throughout the curriculum our staff highlight the importance of leading healthy and active lives, together with a focus on British Values; sportsmanship, acceptance towards winning and losing. The progressive nature of the curriculum sees our students building on their skills and knowledge in year 8 through a range of exciting sports and activities. Students are not only taught and assessed on their competence in the technical and tactical aspects of the curriculum, but in the leadership and officiating perspective as well.
In year 9, broadening sporting experiences fosters and promotes new sports and activities as well as a greater focus analysis of performance and strategies for outwitting opponents.

In Key Stage 4, we provide our students with an increased responsibility in their PE journey where they can opt for specific sporting pathways which have a focus on different areas of the National Curriculum. Students are continuously encouraged to choose a pathway which enables them to strive and thrive to achieve their personal best. Students take their wealth of knowledge and competence into their final year of Key Stage 4 where their curriculum is designed to create a positive mindset and attitude towards healthy and active futures with an emphasis on improving personal fitness.

Our main priority is to ensure that all students can access high quality learning in PE within our outstanding facilities, led by our outstanding practitioners. The content of our curriculum is both creative and engaging, allowing our students to be adequately challenged technically and tactically, with opportunities for peer coaching and analysis to take place. We aim to cultivate positive learning environments that will enable our students to improve not only their physical literacy but also their confidence. WIth there being a huge emphasis on promoting life-long participation, there are ongoing efforts within lessons to promote careers in the sport and PE industry and allowing students to recognise that the sequential learning taking place, can progress into further education and beyond.

Implementation:

The Faculty Lead together with the Faculty Coordinator design a broad and balanced curriculum, including team and individual games. Students develop their technique and improve their performance in competitive sports, perform a range of dance styles and take part in outdoor adventurous activities which present intellectual and physical challenges. Professional Development opportunities are attended to ensure curriculum requirements are met and to develop subject knowledge which is reflected in the delivery of outstanding lessons throughout the department. Staff regularly share good practice to maintain high standards across the faculty, sharing teaching techniques along with behaviour management tactics which enables the department to create a safe and positive learning environment for all students to progress and achieve their personal best in PE.

The new and effective Boldon PE Head Heart and Hands Assessment criteria was designed with a holistic approach. We understand that every child matters and deliver a curriculum with this at the forefront of our teaching. Each sport has its own unique, progressive Head Heart and Heads criteria that enables students to develop and improve in all aspects specific to the sport. This creates a clear pathway for students, they are motivated and driven to improve physical fitness, build confidence and develop a variety of techniques, tactics and strategies to overcome opponents within the sport. New schemes of work have been developed for every sport within the curriculum with the assessment structure and focus incorporated throughout.
