Year 10 – Building on the foundations laid in studying the key concepts of biology, chemistry, and physics in year 9, Students at Boldon School in year 10 will be introduced to the Edexcel GCSE specification. Depending on their targets and ability, they will either follow the combined science specification or the separate science specification. A holistic approach will be taken to determine if students will sit a higher or foundation paper by the end of year 11 and therefore will determine which content is covered within science lessons. Following on from year 9, students will have an equal amount of biology, chemistry and physics lessons with an additional retrieval lesson taught. Those studying separate science will have a teacher for biology, chemistry, and physics.
Combined science specification –
Separates Biology specification –
Separates Chemistry specification –
Separates Physics specification –
Year 11 – Students will complete studying the Edexcel GCSE specification which they have already started. Students will have the opportunity to carry out and understand every core practical experiment outlined in the specification. The aim will be to complete the specification as early as possible so students have the chance to address gaps in their knowledge and revisit areas where cohorts of individuals have struggled to grasp the first time around. Not only will retrieval lessons continue to enhance students’ understanding and revision but as all topics have been covered students will be able to identify links between not only topics but also specialisms, solidifying their understanding. In line with dates set out by the exam board, students will set 6 GCSE papers at the end of the year, 2 for each specialism.

Autumn Term (Sep-Dec) |
Those studying combined science will cover health and disease, forces and recycling. Students will cover various methods of extracting metals, including electrolysis which is one of the core practical experiments students must be able to do for their exams.
They will also go on to cover plants and radioactivity which includes topic links with chemistry and numeracy skills.
With their chemistry teacher, separate science students will cover electrolysis, metal and recycling as well as equilibria.
Separate science students will cover radioactivity and forces with their physics teacher whilst their biology teacher will deliver lessons on health and disease before starting plants.
Students will begin to look back on practical experiments covered in previous years as well as gain further understanding of command words through the retrieval lessons. | Physics lessons will cover electricity and circuits and magnetism. Students will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of using circuit components. Chemistry lessons will focus on fuels, students will be taught the skill of drawing the displayed formula of molecules in this organic chemistry topic. Biology teachers will cover coordination and control this term as well as exchange and transport, students will have a sound understanding of these by the end of the topics. Retrieval lessons will focus on topics covered at the beginning of the course as well as practice using key scientific formulas. | ||
