Textiles Student Views

Children and young people can offer unique perspectives on what it is like to be a student at their school. At Boldon School, we value the views of our students, involving them in decision-making, helping to shape our curriculum, as well as facilitating a sense of empowerment and inclusion.

We have a whole-school commitment to listening to the views, wishes and experiences of all children and young people. It means placing value on what children and young people tell school staff about their experiences. This is of particular importance across each subject area. We try to promote meaningful opportunities to share their experiences, views and hopes about their school. To build a safe environment, better relationships across the whole school community and empower students with the knowledge that what they say is valued and will be listened to and considered.

We are proud to hear their views about our curriculum, teachers and the learning environment we create:

In textiles we learn how to use the sewing machines and work with a variety of fabrics. We have looked at different types of printing in our lessons and experimented with felting and a sewing technique called applique. Recently we have just started a cushion project where we have been designing a cushion using artist inspiration.

Year 9

I enjoy working on the sewing machines and learning about lots of different textiles techniques. We have been looking at the theme ‘fruits and florals’ for our project this year. It has been nice to use natural sources to base our work from. Some techniques we have completed in our lessons are dyeing and tie dye, printing, mark making, marbling and batik.

Year 10

In textiles this year we have been working on our main project. For this we chose our own theme which I have loved as it has allowed me to be independent and creative. My final product is going to be a corset, I am using the skills learnt in year 9 & 10 and developing these further to make them interesting and unique. I really enjoy how creative and inventive this subject allows me to be.
