Performing Arts

“Acting is not about being famous, it’s about exploring the human soul.”

Through the performing arts curriculum, students are given the opportunity to understand various roles, take part in improvisation, create new scripts and perform in various performances. They will also enhance their knowledge of existing texts and plays through analysis of key literature.

Learners will have the opportunity to interpret both modern and classical texts. Blood Brothers is always a popular choice for our students, as they enjoy the fast paced drama and irony of the script. We enjoy taking classes to the Newcastle Theatre Royal to see productions of this play when possible in order to inspire their personal performances.

Students will also become familiar with classic Shakespearean texts, offering them the opportunity to build upon their diverse performance abilities. Specialist translation scripts for these plays are offered to students in order to allow them to develop their understanding of 16th/17th  century language.

We provide students with the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience when completing their externally assessed piece. The topic of this performance is set each year by the RSL exam board.  The live audience will generally comprise of staff and fellow peers, and offers performers the chance to experience a genuine theatre environment.

Learners will also be able to explore the building of characters through the use of masks, makeup, costume and props.

Ultimately, this course prepares students with both the skills and the confidence that they will need to continue their studies in the performing arts subject area.
