Spanish

If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”

(Nelson Mandela)

At Boldon, our vision for Spanish is simple. We want students to enjoy
learning Spanish, engage in learning a foreign language and be
challenged to become the best linguist they can be. We don’t just see
Spanish as a school subject. We see it as a skill that can be used
practically for life, long after finishing secondary school and throughout
adulthood. In Spanish at Boldon, we also strive to demonstrate to
students the skills that can be gained through learning languages, way
beyond the MFL classroom and can be used on a daily basis in other
subjects and areas of life.

The staff in the MFL department have all studied a range of foreign
languages to university-degree level, or are native speakers of the
chosen language. They have all spent time either working or studying in
a foreign, or even multiple foreign countries, meaning that they can
share first-hand the personal and professional benefits that learning a
foreign language can offer. Staff work collaboratively, sharing ideas and
resources with each other to inspire each other’s teaching practice and
to create engaging lessons which motivate students to become the best
student they can be.

Students are assessed in a challenging yet accessible way, with pupils
retrieving knowledge, learning different topics which they can relate to
and are tested on the four key-skills of language-learning: reading,
listening, speaking and writing.

Uptake of Spanish continues to grow each year, becoming ever more
popular among students. We encourage all students to study a
language, no matter what their background may be. As well as teaching
students to succeed in the classroom, we aim to teach students practical
language skills which can be used abroad and to teach them about
countries where the target language is spoken, in order for students to
understand the benefits of learning a foreign language.
