“Physical education makes every child stronger and every life longer!”
Physical education is a vital part of school life that shapes a child’s future well-being. At Boldon, our aim is to provide an inclusive, broad and balanced curriculum across all year groups that ensures all children will benefit from their physical education lesson. This may be through learning new skills, being introduced to new sports, clubs, teams and organisations or by enhancing existing skills.
We strive to ensure that children understand the importance of leading a healthy, active lifestyle and to equip them with the tools to do so after they leave school. Students must understand how to take care of themselves both physically and mentally in order to be successful as adults. To learn how to solve problems, build resilience, respect and the ability to analyse themselves and others.
We have a highly committed and dedicated staff team who specialise in their own areas, who ensure that the students receive high quality PE lessons which are mapped out in broad and balanced curriculum supported by in-depth schemes of work. Each year group will receive a minimum of 2 lessons of PE each week with additional sporting clubs run after school on most nights offering a mixture of competitive clubs and teams alongside those who just enjoy an active lifestyle. The curriculum will aim to develop positive self-awareness in children as they become physically competent. They will also demonstrate a healthy attitude to competition, showing respect for individuals, teams, officials and coaches. We listen to students and regularly change the curriculum to strengthen all areas- love traditional- football, netball, gymnastics, rugby, dance or like something away from the norm with a bit of MMA, Clubbercise or recently added roller blading (who doesn’t love a roller disco???)
We have designed each year group activities so that knowledge, skills and understanding are embedded and developed, built on and broadened across Key Stage 3. It is then designed to give students their own personalised choice of where to specialise in, strive to achieve their personal best and then finally design their own curriculum at the end of Key Stage 4.
Year 7 Creating a love for physical education
Year 8 Developing skills and embedding knowledge
Year 9 Broadening sporting experiences
Year 10 Striving and thriving to achieve your personal best- pick your own pathway
Year 11 Designing a curriculum for healthy and active futures- design your own curriculum from start to finish
We will assess all students through the Head, Heart and Hands assessment structure, where staff can assess the progress of pupils holistically. When assessing, the Head criteria focuses on the knowledge acquisition and understanding, the Heart focuses on skills such as attitude to learning, communication skills and respect and the Hands criteria focuses on physical ability, fitness levels and tactics. You don’t have to be a sports star to be good and progress in PE.
Students can get involved in a number of different experiences, as leaders with our primary schools, as officials within competitions, through our girls active programme, competitions and so much more. We support National initiatives with Sky Athlete programmes, mental health educators and workshops in Show Racism the Red Card.
At the beginning of each PE class, students are given the chance to submit any valuable belongings for safekeeping. If students happen to forget their PE kit, they must borrow a PE kit provided by the school. When borrowing the PE kit, students are required to hand in an item of their uniform, preferably their school jumper. The item will be returned to them once they return the borrowed PE kit.
