Art & Design Key Stage 3

ART Year 7 – Students create art for themselves. Students come from a number of different primary schools and as such have a wide variety of art skills. Year 7 is about building upon these skills and developing all areas. They have the opportunity to work in specialised rooms for the first time and see real artists at work. Year 7 is about introducing students to a wide range of different media they have not explored before. Developing skills on how to use pencils, pens, biro, watercolours, acrylics and textiles to high standards and creating an atmosphere where they can enjoy the subject and be successful in their art. They develop their understanding of artists each half term, building up a knowledge base to support work in upper school. Towards the end of the year they have the opportunity to work on a larger scale piece of art allowing them to use skills and techniques developed over the year.

Year 8 –  Students create art for a client. While they develop skills learnt in year 7,  students also have the opportunity to develop new skills in photography, modern pop art and start to look at the art world around them with the ‘Our Town’ project. Basic drawing skills are further developed and students are encouraged to work on their art at home. Different artists remain a focus in each half term to support their own creative work and teach students an appreciation of art work. Our year 8 curriculum encourages self expression and builds confidence in our students’ art work while allowing them a sense of individual identity.

Year 9 – Students create art for the wider society. In year 9 they are beginning to experiment with a wider range of materials, techniques and processes. At the beginning of the year students follow a directed curriculum which builds further on the skills they have developed earlier in the key stage. Their work becomes quite experimental with a body of work linked to the collage artist Michael Mews. Towards the end of year 9 students are given the opportunity to merge the idea of natural forms and man made objects,  they are encouraged to make creative decisions which helps them refine their ideas and experiments and their outcomes are more individual and expressive. The structure of the curriculum in Year 9 really prepares students for beginning their individual projects in year 10 and teaches them how to structure their investigations in order to successfully gather evidence towards each of the four GCSE assessment objectives.

Autumn Term

(Sep-Oct)

Formal Elements

Students will gain an introduction and understanding of the basic principles of art, and understand how accurately they shade in order to make drawings look 3D and realistic. Students will practice and develop observational drawing skills and understand and demonstrate one point perspective. Students will explore primary, secondary and tertiary colours and investigate artists.

Photography

Students will be introduced to the mixed media artist Michelle Robb. They will complete some contextual research and experiment with mixed media and photo editing techniques in the style of this artist. They will take some portrait photographs and learn how to manipulate these using Photoshop with a particular emphasis on using layers to build up an image. Students will also create a mixed media collage using portrait threshold drawings as a final outcome for the project.

Natural Forms – Researching

students will spend some time learning how to research the work of other artists and craftspeople. They will begin to understand that research is the basis for any project and that their ideas are built upon good quality contextual research.

Quality Mark Assessments

QM

One point-perspective. Looking at the ability to draw cubes into a vanishing point and shade considering a light source.

The Quality Mark exercise will address strengths and weaknesses of individual students across the first tasks in the project. students will have the opportunity to make improvements to show that they have used their feedback.

During the first half term students will be given two sets of feedback which look holistically at the skills they have developed so far.

Autumn Term

(Nov-Dec)

Aboriginal Art

Within this project students will explore the theme of aboriginal art and some of the different styles associated with it. They will gain a basic understanding of aboriginal culture, understand basic aboriginal colours, explore concentric circles and dot work and use real aboriginal examples to inspire their own designs. Students will be taught how to be considerate of colour and pattern and will experiment with a variety of media such as: pencil, coloured pencil, paint and oil pastel.

Textiles

Students  will explore and research different types of art textiles and develop descriptive and analytical writing skills when studying the work of a number of different textiles artists. They will experiment with some basic textiles techniques such as tie dye, polyblock printing and stenciling and learn who these are used within textiles industries.

Natural Forms – drawing and painting

Students will spend this half term learning and developing skills using pencils and paints such as watercolour and acrylics. students  will study primary and secondary sources of fruit, vegetables and flowers to experiment using paint in different ways to recreate these natural objects. They will paint realistic representations by identifying dark and light tones and shades and work more expressively to change the mood and effect of a piece of work. students will develop their presentation skills and  learn how to put together an experimentation page using images of pumpkins.

Quality Mark Assessments

The Quality Mark will focus specifically on the polyblock printing exercise. students will receive feedback against the success criteria and will complete a written task to show they understand how to make a successful print.

Students will receive feedback following a drawing task and painting task and will be given ideas on how to improve their skills focusing on use of line, tone and shade in these mediums.

Spring Term

(Jan-Feb)

Bugs

Within this project students will learn to further experiment with a variety of media and use mixed media within their work. They will learn how to blend and create tone with coloured pencil and  use symmetry in art to produce accurate observational drawings. Students will complete a series of timed studies and explore techniques such as ‘bleed and dry’. The focus of the project is to improve and develop observational drawing skills.

Portraiture

At the beginning of this half term students will compare and contrast the work of a number of different portrait artists who use different media and materials in their work. They will begin to record and draw facial features using traditional drawing materials such as pencil and pen. They will look at the proportion and symmetry of the human face and will use the knowledge they have learned to produce a realistic portrait. Later in the project students will develop their images into very simple portraits in the style of Julian Opie and will identify key characterics from his work to inform their own experiments.

Natural forms – Mixed Media

students will analyse the work of the artist Michael Mews. They will look at the way he builds his compositions and uses a mixture of drawing, painting and collage within his work. students will begin to plan out their own outcomes in the style of Michael Mews and they will start to make their own creative decisions.

Quality Mark Assessments

QM

The quality mark for this half term will be based on a printing activity. Students will be assessed on their print design as well as how they execute the technique

Students will be assessed on their realistic drawing tasks. They will receive feedback on their drawings of facial features and will use this feedback to draw a full portrait to show they have used feedback to improve their drawing skills.

Students will receive feedback on their Michael Mews inspired outcome. This will focus on their ability to make creative decisions linked to the work of the artist.

Spring Term

(Feb-April)

Bugs- CONTINUED

Within this project students will learn to further experiment with a variety of media and use mixed media within their work. They will learn how to blend and create tone with coloured pencil and  use symmetry in art to produce accurate observational drawings. Students will complete a series of timed studies and explore techniques such as ‘bleed and dry’. The focus of the project is to improve and develop observational drawing skills.

Sweets

Students will generate some initial contextual research on artists who have based their work on sweets. They will develop the analytical skills they have been taught earlier in KS3 to interpret images. students  will recap basic drawing techniques and focus on refining and developing these skills using tone and shade by producing some initial pencil drawings from both primary and secondary sources. They will then use mixed media, pencil and paint to create some further experiments to develop and refine their ideas.

Man-Made – Drawing and Experimenting

Students will study the artist Jim Dine and will produce a research page about him. They will develop the analytical skills they have learned previously to identify key aspects of his work. They will produce some initial drawings of man made objects but will then also develop and refine their ideas using other materials and techniques such as printmaking and stenciling to explore the theme. They will also have the opportunity to look at some more modern artists to inform their thinking.

Quality Mark Assessments

Students will receive feedback on their mixed media response. Their creative decision making will be analysed and they will have an opportunity to continue to develop their outcome idea following feedback from their teacher.
